FOSTER-TO-ADOPT

***Please apply at https://www.fetchandreleash.ca/adoption-info#adoption-form***

As a foster-to-adopt family, you will have two weeks to get to know your new furry house guest before committing to adoption. At the end of two weeks, if you choose not to move forward with adoption, we simply ask that you continue to provide a safe and loving home until their new forever family can be found.

During your foster-to-adopt trial, you’ll receive the support of a Fetch + Releash mentor to help you through the transition and answer any questions or concerns you may have.

Foster-to-adopt families will be required to pay a $200 deposit on the adoption fee and sign our foster-to-adopt waiver in advance. If you choose not to adopt, your $200 will be refunded to you within 30 days of your dog being adopted into a new family provided you see your pup through to adoption. If you choose not to see your dog through to adoption, you will forfeit your deposit.

Foster-to-adopt families will be expected to provide their own supplies. Visit https://www.fetchandreleash.ca/adoption-info for more info on mandatory supplies.

Kiko / M / 5Y / 54lbs / Mixed Breed / Prefers Suburbs or Quiet Country / Some Dog Experience Ideal / No Kids Preferred / Good Solo Pet / From Mexico / Fostered in Toronto

Meet Kiko! Kiko has been through a lot and came from a very difficult background. Originally from Mexico, he used to live alone on a rooftop for most of his life. He stole the hearts of everyone at the shelter, and they quickly realized he was a very special boy – who deserved a shot at the good life in Canada. Despite everything he has been through, this handsome boy is described as affectionate, loyal, curious, playful and independent. He has a gentle heart, and will really start to thrive once he gets a sense of permanence and belonging in his family. He is ready for a family committed to helping him reach his full potential!

Kiko loves to sniff, explore and go for walks throughout the day. Currently, he gets 5 walks a day between 20-50 minutes each. He is adaptable and medium energy, so he could happily adjust to a new walk schedule as needed. With his current schedule, he is happy to nap the day away with occasional solo play session. He does well on leash but he can be a strong boy when he wants to be. With continued support he will come far, but currently he should only be walked by strong handlers. He is fully potty trained and has wonderful house manners.

Once Kiko has had the time to decompress in his new home, he meets new people well. He is a true people dog and loves human company. New people are best advised to allow him to come around on his own, and be cognizant of his body language. Its the responsibility of his trusted humans to ensure guests respect his space and advocate for his comfort at all times.

Kiko thrives as a solo pet – where he can soak up all the attention to himself. After a lonely life, he deserves it! At the shelter in Mexico, he was able to coexist with other dogs but mostly kept to himself. Once he changed environments to a home, the close quarters and new structure made it clear that Kiko would do best on his own. He bonds closely with his humans and doesn’t want to share their love, and will resource guard as a result. He would be happiest as the only pet in the home.

Kiko is not crate trained but has shown no signs of anxiety when left alone at home for a few hours. He has a few favorite spots in the house and is a very good boy about not going up on the furniture. He sleeps throughout the night, waiting patiently for his foster family to wake up to go for walks!

Kiko is a sensitive boy and does best with an experienced handler. Most walks are uneventful but has been known to react when he is insecure or surprised. Due to this, Kiko is required to where a muzzle while on walks. His adopters will need to be comfortable continuing the use of his muzzle when the streets or sidewalks are more congested. His trusted humans need to advocate for comfort and safety by ensuring he always has the space he needs while on walks. He will also need a family who is committed to working on his leash etiquette, obedience training and over all confidence.

Kiko’s ideal home would be outside of the city, where the roads and streets are quiet. He bonds closely with his trusted humans and appreciates their company the most. He would make an excellent companion dog to a family who lives in farm country or suburbs. Preference will be given to families who live outside of Toronto, and who are willing to hire professional guidance as needed. With confidence, consistency and balanced leadership, Kiko has nothing but potential ahead!
